Outbreak of Measles in Liverpool

There is currently a large outbreak of measles in Liverpool with nearly 200 confirmed cases and NHS Blackpool is concerned for the safety of children who have not been immunised. Measles is highly infectious and the risk of cases occurring more widely in Lancashire is high.

Measles is a serious illness. Symptoms include fever, cough, soreness of the eyes and a rash which spreads rapidly over the body. Complications affect one in 15 children. These include chest infections, fits, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and brain damage. In very serious cases, measles can kill.

NHS Blackpool strongly advises vaccination for any child or young person 16 years and under who have not had the recommended number of MMR vaccinations. Vaccination with two doses of MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine offers the only reliable protection against measles. The routine schedule for MMR vaccination is given below:

• the first dose usually given at the age of 12 months
• the second dose given before school entry around 3 years 4 months of age (sometimes known as the pre-school booster).

For children and young people who have not had the recommended doses, please contact the GP practice to arrange an appointment for him/her to receive any outstanding doses of MMR vaccine as quickly as possible.

Your doctor, practice nurse, health visitor or school nurse will be pleased to discuss any queries you may have regarding the MMR vaccination.

Our expert team use a range of high and low tech devices to help disabled learners reach their full potential. We have been invited by NAACE to enter the 3rd Millennium Award based on our expert pedagogies that facilitate a wide range of learning styles.

Our students follow customised individual learning pathways. This is driven by using new learning styles and curriculum pedagogies that are supported by information technology. This may be adapted and modified to empower the learner. Pupils at Highfurlong school are expert users of augmentative and alternative communication. The video demonstrated how they use technology to learn. It is very different from other schools. We think this promotes the child’s cognitive, emotional and social understanding of the world.

We told the world about our caving trip to Yorkshire.

This is what we wrote:

Today in class 3 we are writing about when we went caving. This is part of our writing lesson. We went caving with Bendrigg Lodge to Ingleborough Show cave. It was dark and wet. We wore red suits and a helmet with a light on it. We saw rocks, stalagtites and stalagmites. It was cold and scary in the cave but very exciting!

This lovely image was part of a student’s Annual Review meeting this morning. She used a head switch to show her mother  an excellent range of images illustrating her customised learning pathway at Highfurlong School.
