The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum at Highfurlong is delivered using a play-based approach as outlined by the EYFS. ‘The term curriculum is used to describe everything children do, see, hear or feel in their setting, both planned and unplanned.’ We recognise that every child is a learner who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. We recognise that children develop in individual ways, at varying rates. Children’s attitudes and dispositions to learning are influenced by input and feedback from others. We use praise and encouragement, as well as sharing a weekly celebration assembly, recognising and rewarding learning in all areas of school life. This aims to encourage children to develop a positive attitude to learning.
Our foundation stage has one classroom with its own outdoor provision, as well as a large outdoor area, which is shared. All our learning environments are organised to allow children to explore and learn securely and safely. There are areas where the children can be active, interact with nature, develop physically or be quiet and rest. Throughout nursery and reception children’s knowledge, understanding, skills and achievements are assessed and tracked using the developmental stages set out in the document ‘Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)’. We believe that all parents have an important role to play in the education of their child. We recognise the role that parents have played, and their future role, in educating the children. We complete a ‘Wow of the Week!’ book, which enables pupils to share with parents those special developmental moments that happen in school. Children learn best when they are healthy, safe and secure, when their individual needs are met, and when they have positive relationships with the adults caring for them. At Highfurlong, we aim to do our very best for our youngest pupils, as they are the seeds of the future.
